Level 1 British Sign Language (BSL) Course - Online

The Signature accredited Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (BSL) is a qualification desibned to teach learners to communicate with deaf people on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. The learners will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of British Sign Language (BSL).

To achieve the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (BSL), learners must pass all 3 units:

• BSL 101 - Introduction to BSL - Meeting people, Using numbers, Weather, Transport & Directions (5 minute assessment)

• BSL 102 - Conversational BSL - Describing People, animals & objects, Using numbers, Interests & activities, Food & Drink

  (4-5 minute assessment)

• BSL 103 - Communicate in BSL about Everyday Life - Getting around, Sharing information, Weather & Using numbers

  (4-5 minute assessment)

The Level 1 Award is suitable for those who:

• want to learn basic language skills to communicate simple conversations with deaf people

• want to learn new langauge skills as part of a programme of study

• want to progress to more advanced study and/or employment

• are studying for personal development

• are parents, family, friends, or colleagues of deaf people

The course will be held on Mondays from 6:30pm-8:30pm with Lucy Gurthrie online via Zoom.

• 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th November 

• 1st, 8th, 15th December (22nd & 29th half term)

• 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th January 2026

• 2nd, 9th, 23rd February (16th half term)

• 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd March (30th half term)

• 13th, 20th, 27th April (6th bank holiday)

• 11th, 18th May (4th & 25th bank holiday)

• 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd June

Assessment dates

• 29th June BSL 101 assessment

• 6th July BSL 102 assessment

• 13th July BSL 103 assessment

Course fee

£495 + online service fee

Monthly payment option

£95 deposit to reserve a place on the course (non refundable) followed by £40 monthly instalments x 10 (Please select manual payment at checkout and use the bank details provided to pay the deposit. We'll be in touch with a contract to complete to confirm the monthly payments.)
